Cauley Woodrow speaks following Brentford win

25 July 2020

Top scorer Cauley Woodrow says Barnsley have relished their trips to London this season after picking up another priceless victory in the capital on Wednesday evening.

The Reds have been successful on their journeys south, enjoying impressive wins at Millwall, Fulham, Queens Park Rangers and Brentford, and the striker feels that teams may have underestimated his side at times this season.

“We’ve had a lot of success against the top teams – and in London,” began Woodrow. “Maybe there’s a psychological thing in terms of teams thinking we’re only Barnsley, we’re bottom of the league.

“But, like we’ve shown against Brentford, like we’ve shown in the past, we can cause teams a lot of problems and it’s probably been the highlight of our season, coming to London, winning points and having good performances.”

Woodrow’s 14-goal haul this campaign has been crucial to the Reds’ survival bid, with the majority of them coming playing in the number 10 position.

The tactical change since Gerhard Struber arrived at Oakwell in November has been clear to see, but it’s the confidence that he has given his young team that has made all the difference.

Barnsley had just nine points when he took charge of his first fixture against Blackburn Rovers. Fast-forward 33 games and his side have amassed a further 40 to ensure survival in the Sky Bet Championship.

“He’s had a massive effect,” insisted Woodrow. “As you can see, the style of play we’re playing at the moment – he’s very big on his tactics and what he wants. He’s a man with a lot of belief, a lot of passion and sometimes that’s half the battle.

“You can be a good team, but if you haven’t got the heart, the passion or the desire you get nowhere. We’ve shown it all season and that’s why we’ve done the impossible and managed to stay up.”
